Camera Class 1

Camera Class 1

Yesterday (Wed/17/Sep) we were told that we would be having class the next day in the filming room, I was excited, I had seen the room before, it has a massive green screen, dolly’s, cranes and great cameras so I was excited to have class there the next day too hopefully work with some of the equipment in that room.

Film Room
Today we arrived in class and were greater by Mike my media teacher and once all the pupils had arrived he guided us to the film room, when we walked in we were introduced too Matt and Paul who are the people who work in the film room they were going to be our teachers for the day.

After introducing themselves Matt and Paul brought out three big long black bags and three big black cases. He split the class up into three groups of 5 and gave us each one of the black bags and one of the cases. Matt opened up one of the long black bags and showed us what was inside, it was a black tripod made by Vinten©. I was already aware about how to work a tripod but others in the class were not so he showed the class how to pull out the legs of the tripod to make the tripod stand up. He also showed us how to adjust the Bubble Level so that the tripod was levelled and finally he showed us how to put the handle onto the tripod.

After Matt talked to us and showed us the tripod he opened up one of the black cases where there was a camera, the avchd sony hrm x5, he pulled it out and showed it to all of us. Our next task was to get the camera onto the tripod, so that is what we did; Once that was done we had to figure out where the focus, zoom, and iris rings were, I had already worked with camera’s like these so i already knew where these were placed. Once every body in the whole class had practiced zooming into things, focusing on certain objects and turning up and down the brightness we moved onto working with the white balance. We started by focusing on some thing outside, then we turned the camera to inside the room where the lighting was different and so whites appeared sort of orange colored, we held up a white A4 sheet of paper, zoomed and focused on it then clicked the white balance button, once we did that the white balance was correct and the white A4 piece of paper looked white.

Once we had finished with the white balance Matt and Paul told us to pack everything back into the bags and cases, once everything was packed away Matt told us that we were going to have a race and see who could set up the tripod, turn on the camera, fix the white balance and focus on something. Obviously my team won and we won “my (matt’s) respect”.

In conclusion I found todays lesson very fun, even though I knew quite a bit of what was shown to us today I can still say I learned some new things.
