THRILLER INTRO IDEA 1

THRILLER INTRO IDEA 1

IDEA 1:
Bad Trip:
Plot of whole film: The whole film is based around a few hours, it is about a young teenager which try’s a new crazy psychedelic drug and has a bad experience with it. The movie is mostly set inside the kids mind during his bad trip, we see what the teen see’s in his head which is pretty much a nightmare but he is also awake so he see’s it around him, it is pretty much like alice in wonderland but in a horribly scary, thrilling and disturbing version.

Intro:
Establishing shots of a house with music playing and then we see a shot of inside the house, we see 3 teens sitting in a circle all looking at each other smiling they all lift up their index finger which seems to have some sort of a drug on it and we get a shot going around the circle of each teen putting the drug on their tongue, the last teen the camera stays on. Then once the last teen (the main character) puts the drug in his mouth and closes his mouth smiling and his eyes, the mood completely switches and the teens eyes open in a scare and we start to see flashes of horrific things intercut with the teens frightened face, the cuts slowly become faster until they are really fast and like strobe, the cuts become so fast that it all fades out to black, and then the title appears.

25 word pitch: Your worst nightmare, on crazy drugs.

Mood Board:

Feedback received from class:
Out of all the 3 different thriller intro idea's I had I decided to pitch this one to the class because it was my favourite and in my opinion the class really liked it as well, when i finished reading out this thriller intro pitch I heard a few voices around the class saying things like “Wow!” and “Oh my god!”, so people seemed to really like this one. Most of the feed back I got for this thriller intro idea was positive, the first piece of feedback I got was on the title of the film, people found it creative and smart how i tied the title to the plot of the whole film in a creative way. Another thing I got positive feedback on was the shot where it looks like the camera goes through the boys eye and into his head, this seemed to be the favourite part of the idea for a lot of people in the class, they said it was original and very creative but some people in the class did question how hard the shot was going to be to accomplish. One piece of constructive feedback I got was on the fact that their is the use of drugs in my intro, and how it is a little risky to film things like drugs for a school project in a school environment, I was advised to maybe think of what other thing I could use to replace drugs in the opening sequence just incase I was told I wasn't allowed to use drugs. Overall I was very pleased with the way the class reacted to my thriller intro, it was my favourite and they seemed to feel the same way, they also left me with a few things to work on and think about which i found helpful to the improvement of this idea.

THRILLER INTRO IDEA 2

THRILLER INTRO IDEA 2

IDEA 2:
Plot of whole film: A man which is on the run from something but for then entire film we do not know what, it could be police/drug cartel/gang/demons etc. The film follows this man through his growing paranoia and insanity until the peak of the film when the man is killed, but by the end the man is so paranoid and insane that we are not sure if the death is real or not and it has some highly surreal parts to it. The film is very dark, strange, disturbing and thrilling.

Intro:
A very dark foggy night, viewer see’s and old american type car (like a mustang), it seems like a fast car. The head lights are shining brightly through the fog and you can see a man in the front seat but from far away, you can hear a muffled radio which is playing an old bad quality type song (possibly country music), then we get a shot inside the car and you can hear the radio more loudly, it is very bad quality, the music slowly starts to become only white noise and starts to become disturbingly loud. Whilst the music is doing this their are shots of the man and the car, the car is very dirty, it has a lot of maps and empty bottles of alcohol and a lot of empty cigarette packs, the man is just sitting still (possibly playing with something in a repetitive manner like a cigarette or car keys), the shots of the man are weird and slowly speeding up and slowly getting weirder as the white noise get louder, they break the 180 degree rule and are like upside down and stuff to make it look weird and not normal. The opening credits are either written on stuff like the window with blood or lipstick and not exactly directly noticeable, you have to search for it, or the opening credits are done digitally and are made in a way which seems sort of disturbing. The man then shakes his head as if getting out of a trance or hypnosis and the music is back to normal, the starts the engine and drives off into the darkness until we cant see it anymore and then the screen fades to black and the title appears.

25 word pitch: A very dark, cold and sinister intro which is visually stunning. It’s artistic and experimental whilst being entertaining. it is simple yet confusing and normal yet disturbing.

THRILLER INTRO IDEA 3

THRILLER INTRO IDEA 3

IDEA 3:
Plot of whole film: Important man is kidnapped and taken for ransom, the movie is about the struggle of survival in the habitat he is in and his attempts at escape, which end up being unsuccessful because during a military saving mission the kidnappers kill him before he can be saved.

Intro:
POV of man tied up in chair (not GoPro type POV, more professional looking).
Black bag put over head (and camera because it is POV), the bag is not made out of plastic but out of material which is thick but also relatively see through.
Man is says something along the lines of “no, no!” but as iff he had a cloth in his mouth, and he is breathing very heavily.
Man is dragged to a car (you can see blurry head lights of car through bag).
You can hear car doors open and people mumbling.
Man is violently put in trunk of car (you hear trunk door close and all the blurry light seen through the bag is gone and it is all black).
Man still breathing loud and you hear him start to shuffle around as you hear the car engine start, and the car begin to drive.
It is black screen but with a few very light hints of blurry light hear and there.
The opening credits begin to appear on the black screen.
You hear the man scuffle about and try and try and hit the trunk roof and shout for help (still with cloth in mouth); This goes on for a while until the opening credits end.
You hear car start to slow down as if arriving at its destination, and the man goes quiet.
Trunk of car opens and you see vague blurry light through the  bag again.
The man is stopped being dragged and the bag is pulled off his head, and right as the bag is pulled over his eyes (the camera lens) a very bright white light is shined facing the camera and it is blinding.
From the white of the light there is then a fade to white and the title of the movie on the white background.
Then either fade to black or straight cut to black.

25 word pitch: A unique intro, it does not contain a lot of visuals and rely’s heavily on sound, it does everything an intro could do with filming but with sound.

Genre

Genre
To start off I will begin by defining “Genre”, it is defined by the Apple dictionary as “a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterised by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.” Too quickly sum up what that means, it is a form of categorisation of different media texts, for example a romantic novel for books, Rap for music, and Thriller for movies.

Hybrid Genre
A hybrid genre is a blend of two or more genre’s, meaning that there is a significant enough amount of elements from two or more genre’s mixed together in the same media text, that it officially becomes a new genre of its own, the hybrid genre. For example in film, there is a romantic genre and there is a comedy genre, if elements of both those genres are used together at a high enough amount in a media text then it becomes a hybrid genre, a mix of the two genre’s, therefor falling under the hybrid genre category: RomCom (Romantic+Comedy=RomCom).

Sub Genre
A Sub Genre can easily be defined as a genre within a genre, a sub category of a specific genre. If the one wants to be specific when categorising a film and finds that a genre is too broad and too general, then one can pay attention to certain specific elements of the film and see what sub category it falls under in the Genre; For example a “Disaster Thriller”, if one finds thriller to broad of a categorisation for this type of movie then one can look into the specifics, there has to be a disaster/natural disaster taking place in the movie, and the main character has to acknowledge the disaster and has to be someway involved in stopping it or getting away from it, and once these specifics are picked up then it can be categorised as a “Disaster Thriller.

Sub Genres of Thriller

“Thriller” is a genre of media texts, it is a category which certain media texts, if they meet certain criteria fall into. Apple dictionary says that it should have “an exciting plot, typically involving crime or espionage.” As indicated by the title, one should be trilled when consuming this media text therefor should cause a person to have a feeling of excitement, nervousness and should create an element of anticipation and suspense. The narrative of a thriller typically follows something called the Todorov theory, which explains that a thriller conventionally starts with an “Equilibrium” meaning the norm of that moment, this is then followed by the “Disruption of the equilibrium” meaning that what is normal is disturbed and things are different in a usually bad way, then comes the “Resolution” where the disruption is stopped which leads to “Restored order” where things start to become normal, but an adapted type of normal which ends up being the “New equilibrium” which is a version of the original equilibrium but a version affected by the now resolved disruption.

Psychological Thriller

All sub genre’s of thriller must have some of the already explained conventions of a thriller movie, but to make it a Psychological Thriller it should incorporate elements of drama films and mystery films. The main character of a psychological thriller usually has to stop the “Disruption of the equilibrium” with his mind and usually rare mental powers.

               Black Swan - 2010                                           Cube - 1997                                                  The Silence of The Lambs - 1991

Crime Thriller
A crime thriller is a sub genre of thriller so it has most of the conventions of a thriller movie but which involves a whole crime plot, meaning that the story of the movie should involve the committing of crimes e.g. robbery, murder etc. Psychological thriller’s usually use action scenes to try and build suspense and a thrilling effect which are required to be classified as a thriller.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo                                                  Taken - 2008                                                              Nightcrawler - 2014
                  2011

Action Thriller
An Action Thriller along with the basic thriller conventions mainly uses action to create tension and suspense in the movie including things like fighting, big stunts, car chases etc. All this to make the audience feel on the edge thinking that something bad could happen to the protagonist during these action scenes.

              Lone Survivor - 2013                                                      3 Days to Kill - 2014                                                           In Time - 2011

Medical Thriller
Medical thrillers are thriller films but which mainly focus around a protagonist working in the medical field  for example a doctor, surgeon, dentist or the film takes place around a medical place for example a hospital or a doctors office etc. The film should involve a thrilling plot where there is a deadly or dangerous medical situation which needs to be resolved, for example an important patient dying, or a mass deaths in a hospital, a deadly virus which spreads around etc.

                Frankenstein - 1931                                                     Shutter Island - 2010                                                       Flatliners - 1990

Religious Thriller
Religious thrillers abide by all the rules of the thriller genre whilst at the same time bringing in the whole them of religion, usually religious people, ceremonies, a place of religion like a church or a religious question. To create a sensation of thrill, Religious thrillers usually are about things like satanism, the non usual religions, ones that involve things like sacrifice. Religious thrillers are also often about supernatural religious experiences like being possessed by a demon, an exorcism etc.

                  Shelter - 2010                                                          Devil's Advocate - 1997                                                     The Exorcist - 1973
