“Thriller” is a genre of media texts, it is a category which certain media texts, if they meet certain criteria fall into. Apple dictionary says that it should have “an exciting plot, typically involving crime or espionage.” As indicated by the title, one should be trilled when consuming this media text therefor should cause a person to have a feeling of excitement, nervousness and should create an element of anticipation and suspense. The narrative of a thriller typically follows something called the Todorov theory, which explains that a thriller conventionally starts with an “Equilibrium” meaning the norm of that moment, this is then followed by the “Disruption of the equilibrium” meaning that what is normal is disturbed and things are different in a usually bad way, then comes the “Resolution” where the disruption is stopped which leads to “Restored order” where things start to become normal, but an adapted type of normal which ends up being the “New equilibrium” which is a version of the original equilibrium but a version affected by the now resolved disruption.
Psychological Thriller
All sub genre’s of thriller must have some of the already explained conventions of a thriller movie, but to make it a Psychological Thriller it should incorporate elements of drama films and mystery films. The main character of a psychological thriller usually has to stop the “Disruption of the equilibrium” with his mind and usually rare mental powers.

Crime Thriller
A crime thriller is a sub genre of thriller so it has most of the conventions of a thriller movie but which involves a whole crime plot, meaning that the story of the movie should involve the committing of crimes e.g. robbery, murder etc. Psychological thriller’s usually use action scenes to try and build suspense and a thrilling effect which are required to be classified as a thriller.

An Action Thriller along with the basic thriller conventions mainly uses action to create tension and suspense in the movie including things like fighting, big stunts, car chases etc. All this to make the audience feel on the edge thinking that something bad could happen to the protagonist during these action scenes.

Medical Thriller
Medical thrillers are thriller films but which mainly focus around a protagonist working in the medical field for example a doctor, surgeon, dentist or the film takes place around a medical place for example a hospital or a doctors office etc. The film should involve a thrilling plot where there is a deadly or dangerous medical situation which needs to be resolved, for example an important patient dying, or a mass deaths in a hospital, a deadly virus which spreads around etc.

Religious Thriller
Religious thrillers abide by all the rules of the thriller genre whilst at the same time bringing in the whole them of religion, usually religious people, ceremonies, a place of religion like a church or a religious question. To create a sensation of thrill, Religious thrillers usually are about things like satanism, the non usual religions, ones that involve things like sacrifice. Religious thrillers are also often about supernatural religious experiences like being possessed by a demon, an exorcism etc.
